For the past 15 years my family and I have had a love affair with the
Labrador Retriever. We had never owned a dog before and never even
considered it.
While away at school I met a woman who bred Labradors. I became
enchanted with them. After I saw my first Whelp I was hooked. I didn't
expect to own a Lab till after I was out of school but fate intervened. My
apartment was burglarized. It was the most horrifying and invasive
experience. I had to have a dog! Not just any dog but the dreaded and
elusive Yellow female Labrador Retriever! The greatest and bravest guard
dog ever created. Boy was I ever in for a surprise.
Although Ariel did eventually develop a threatening bark, after she was a
year old, she would have licked the burglar to death before doing any
harm.
Moral of this story is: Labs can be great watch dogs but not great guard
dogs.
